Preventing broken links can be the difference between missing and landing a client.
By having a custom 404 page your clients will not come across broken links which will usually end up with them closing down your web page. You can set it up as an automatic redirect which I recommend and send it straight back to your home page or a page of your choosing after a given interval. If you don't wish to set it up as a redirect then you can set up your own 'webpage not found' page and give it any look you wish.
Instructions
Below are the steps to set up your custom 404 page.
- Download and save the file to your desktop.
- Once downloaded right click on the compressed file and extract all.
- Open and edit the error.html page to how you wish it to look.
- Upload both the error.html and the htacces.txt file to your public_html folder where the index page is.
- Rename the htacces.txt file to '.htaccess' removing the 'txt' part at the end.
- Your custom 404 page should now be active, type in a web address on your server that doesn't exist and you should see your 404 page.
